David began using improvisation as a major part of his work back in 1986
when he co-founded a group called The Comedy Explosion spawned from
the workshops of Kit Hollerbach at London's Comedy Store in
Leicester Square.
The Comedy Explosion were offered a residency at a local Jazz club where
the punters seemed to make a natural connection between Improv
and Jazz. A Local radio station got wind of what was going on and the fun
that was to be had and invited David and the team to have a regular
sketch spot.
Meanwhile plans were afoot for the Comedy Explosion to
produce a one-off live TV show Spontaneous Combustion for HTV. The
format, in which the audience could phone up with suggestions for
sketches, predated Whose Line is it anyway? by a couple of months.
He was also asked to guest with and set up two other Improv teams,
Comedy Express and More Fool Us. The latter being set up in Bristol by
Paul Z Jackson, incorporating the talents of Rob Brydon, Ruth Jones and
Julia Davis.
David continues to use his knowledge of Improv, both in his general
acting work and in teaching communication skills in a commercial
environment, working again as an Associate of Paul Z Jackson whose
clients include Proctor & Gamble, Hewlitt Packard and many other Blue-
chip companies.
Recently David has been working with a number of highly regarded
companies including the prestigious New York based Improv company
Performance of a Lifetime.
